The Libre Graphics Research Unit is a traveling lab where new ideas for creative tools are developed. Its diverse activities range from the practical to the theoretical via writing, research meetings, experimental prototyping, conferences and workshops. The Research Unit is an initiative of four European media-labs actively engaged in Free/Libre and Open Source Software and Free Culture. This cross-disciplinary project involves artists, designers and programmers and is developed in dialogue with the Libre Graphics community.

This book contains a printed version of our complete online archive. It is generated and printed on demand in editions of 30 (black and white, screen resolution, 8.25″ x 10.75″, hardcover). This reflects the dynamic nature of the source, allowing each edition to be revised and updated. The book will continue to expand untill it reaches 801 pages.
This is a non-official publication, part of an experimental ongoing project that focuses on open source possibilities for design and publishing.

Antoine Moreau est l’un des initiateurs du mouvement Copyleft Attitude rédacteur de la Licence Art Libre (LAL).
Le copyleft est une notion juridique issue des logiciels libres qui autorise, dans le respect des droits de l’auteur, la copie, la diffusion et la transformation des œuvres avec l’interdiction d’en avoir une jouissance exclusive. C’est le projet GNU de la Free Software Foundation initié par Richard Stallman avec la première licence libre copyleft pour logiciels : la General Public License.
Notre recherche concerne le copyleft appliqué à la création hors logiciel telle que nous l’avons initiée en 2000 avec la Licence Art Libre. À travers la pratique que nous en avons et par l’observation de ses effets, nous nous interrogeons sur la place de l’auteur à l’ère du numérique et de l’internet. Nous découvrons une histoire, une histoire de l’art, qui n’est plus déterminée par une fin mais qui débouche sur des créations infinies réalisées par une infinité d’artistes mineurs et conséquents. Nous observons que le copyleft n’est pas un processus de création ordinaire, mais de décréation. Il s’agit d’affirmer, par la négative et la faille, non la négation ou la faillite, mais la beauté d’un geste qui s’offre gracieusement. Ce geste conjugue éthique et esthétique, il est « es-éthique ». Nous comprenons qu’avec le copyleft, la technique est au service d’une politique d’ouverture « hyper-démocratique », à l’image de l’hypertexte du web qui troue les pages et ouvre sur l’altérité. Il s’agit d’articuler le singulier au pluriel en un écosystème qui préserve le bien commun de la passion du pouvoir. Une économie élargie excède, sans le nier, le seul marché. Des œuvres copyleft affirment cette réalité politique et culturelle où l’art forme la liberté commune à tous et à chacun.

The Libre Graphics Meeting (LGM) is an annual meeting on free and open source software for graphics.
Held yearly since 2006 the Libre Graphics Meeting aims to attract developers, artists and professionals who use and improve free and open source software graphics applications. The LGM aims to bring these people together in the cause of creating high quality free graphics applications.
LGM2014 is taking place on April 2-5 in Leipzig, Germany, and will feature workshops for artists and ca. 90 inspiring talks to showcase new and upcoming projects such as Tupi, Kune, Synfig, Laidout, as well as established projects such as GIMP, Krita, Inkscape, Scribus, and Blender.

The design caravan Open Source Publishing invites you for a design education experiment this summer— from 26 up until 30 August
By and large, graphic design students bring a laptop to school, and create their work using digital software tools. This hard- and software represent a technological and cultural heritage that is seldomly questioned, and a potential that goes unexploited. Using free and open source software and engaging in its culture provides an alternative by making a design practice possible with a more intimate and experimental relation to its toolbox.
Beyond the implications for design practice, the culture of free and open source software challenges traditional education paradigms because knowledge is exchanged outside institutional borders, and participants move between roles easily (teacher, student, developer, user). Following from their series of workshops and Print Parties, OSP proposes a summer school experiment. A first try to move across the conventional school model towards a space where the relationship to learning is mediated by graphical software.
