Répertoire de matériel libre

Le matériel libre (en anglais open hardware ou hackable device) désigne les technologies et produits physiques développés selon les principes de l’open source.
Le Matériel OpenSource est un terme qui regroupe des artéfacts tangibles — machines, dispositifs ou toutes choses physiques — dont les plans ont été rendus publics, de façon que quiconque puisse les fabriquer, modifier, distribuer et les utiliser. Une définition commune du Matériel OpenSource (OSHW – OpenSource Hardware) existe et fut créée par différents acteurs. Ceci permet de définir le matériel open source, et d’en conclure les licences qui sont compatibles avec celle-ci.

Arduino

Arduino est un circuit imprimé en matériel libre (dont les plans de la carte elle-même sont publiés en licence libre mais dont certains composants sur la carte, comme le microcontrôleur par exemple, ne sont pas en licence libre) sur lequel se trouve un microcontrôleur qui peut être programmé pour analyser et produire des signaux électriques, de manière à effectuer des tâches très diverses comme la domotique (le contrôle des appareils domestiques – éclairage, chauffage…), le pilotage d’un robot, etc. C’est une plateforme basée sur une interface entrée/sortie simple. Il était destiné à l’origine principalement mais pas exclusivement à la programmation multimédia interactive en vue de spectacle ou d’animations artistiques. C’est une partie de l’explication de la descendance de son interface de programmation de Processing.

CERN Open Hardware Licence

Myriam Ayass, legal adviser of the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Group at CERN and author of the CERN OHL:

In the spirit of knowledge sharing and dissemination, the CERN Open Hardware Licence (CERN OHL) governs the use, copying, modification and distribution of hardware design documentation, and the manufacture and distribution of products.
The CERN–OHL is to hardware what the General Public Licence (GPL) is to software. It defines the conditions under which a licensee will be able to use or modify the licensed material. The concept of ‘open-source hardware’ or ‘open hardware’ is not yet as well known or widespread as the free software or open-source software concept. However, it shares the same principles: anyone should be able to see the source (the design documentation in case of hardware), study it, modify it and share it.
In addition, if modifications are made and distributed, it must be under the same licence conditions – this is the ‘persistent’ nature of the licence, which ensures that the whole community will continue benefiting from improvements, in the sense that everyone will in turn be able to make modifications to these improvements.

The CERN Open Hardware Licence was originally written for CERN designs hosted in the Open Hardware Repository. It can also be used by any designer wishing to share design information using a licence compliant with the OSHW definition criteria.
